About Jonathan Jacobs
Raised here by chance. Settled here by choice.
Jonathan grew up less than half a mile from where he now lives with his family. With roots planted deeply in the community, he attended East Providence public schools through Junior High. Always athletically active in E.P., he played soccer, tennis, ran track, and played Rumford Little League baseball. After graduating from La Salle Academy, he pursued his degree in North Carolina. Upon earning his B.A., however, Jonathan returned to Rhode Island and, with his family, chose to make Rumford their home.
A sixteen year State Employee with the Rhode Island DLT, specializing in income support for displaced workers, he has made a career of public service. As a union leader, Jonathan understands the importance of organizing working people and standing up for working families. He chairs his local union’s committee on political education, and is appointed to the negotiating, and grievance committees.
Over the years, Jonathan has devoted time and energy campaigning on behalf of candidates in whom he believes. He has also worked as an advocate and policy architect for issues including sensible gun reform, mental health funding, tax equity, and insurance fairness. An accomplished writer, Jonathan has contributed dozens of news, opinion, and analysis articles over the years to both local and national publications. A 2014 graduate of the New Leaders Council institute, he was invited to contribute policy research memos to their compacts, and presented his research to national Democratic leaders at a 2017 Conference in Chicago, IL.
In his spare time, Jonathan is an organic gardener, transforming his small, suburban yard into a thriving mix of fruits, vegetables and flowers. Through this practice, he has learned the value of a balanced environment, as well as the hard work that goes into producing healthy food. As a lifelong soccer fan and player, Jonathan coaches for East Providence Youth Soccer Association’s Fall and Spring recreational leagues. An avid runner, he can be found many mornings running the trails near the Turner Reservoir.
